[listening] What's On The Turntable?

The Cure, Glastonbury 2019 set.
Which leads to Suede, Velvet Underground, Arctic Monkeys fourth album, and ends with Joy Division.

Downbeat.

After catching them at Bloodstock last weekend I've been listening to a lot of Green Lung - like Black Sabbath filtered through early 70s folk horror films such as Witchfinder General, The Wicker Man and...er...Virgin Witch:

The latest from CHVRCHES 'Screen Violence' is on heavy rotation at the moment. Personal favourites are 'Asking for a Friend', 'Final Girl' and 'How not to drown'. The album is arguably a concept one as it uses imagery from horror films to shape the language.

The Killer's new album "Pressure Machine" is far more introspective and interesting than the more recent releases. There are shades of Springsteen in parts. It's definitely not what I expected; recognisably them but brilliantly different.

Roger Taylor's (drummer from Queen) new album hits the shelves (and hopefully my doorstep today in lovely vinyl). Anticipating something wistful. Looking forward to seeing him in Shepherds Bush towards the end of the month playing this along with some Queen material.

Well, enjoyed the first run through, sent me on a re-listen of some of his older stuff as well.

Outsider does have this defintite post-prog vibe to it.

Are you referring to the sound or the lyrics? His solo stuff has always had a message or story behind it, increasingly it has become a commentary on the politics and culture of the day, and there's no doubt that this album is a response to the last year or so, and so comes as a package which fits a prog-rock themed album without having the grandeur perhaps of the classic prog-rock anthem albums.

Remaining on a political bent, I woke up to the sound of Kirsty McCall's cover of Billy Bragg's New England. Given into the earworm and have put his 'Must I Paint You a Picture' on:

One of my most memorable concert moments was at the Greenbelt Festival. Polyphonic Spree had just finished with all their noise, sound, colour and energy, and were followed by Bragg. I hadn't seen him before and couldn't see how on earth one bloke with a battered guitar and slightly dodgy vocals could follow them. Whatever you think of his views, he has that 'thing' - had us spellbound for the next hour or so, culminating in an unaccompanied sing-a-long rendition of Jerusalem. Had us in the palm of his hand. Magnificent.

Nice to hear the Floyd on good form 😜

Seriously liked this album.

Thanks @BenQ

Didnit like this much, it was sub-Springsteen at first and then switched to being sub-Killers, ;-)

This has rapidly become one of my favourites this year.

I’m enjoying Public Service Proadcasting’s Homage to Berlin, “Bright Magic”. There’s less archive sampling than usual but some good tracks in there. Looking forward to seeing them live.

They’ve also got a podcast that’s taking the album apart: https://overcast.fm/+z4tADHIVI

Enjoyed.

Just didn't gel for me, sorry.
