[listening] What's On The Turntable?

Yesterday evening, Christina and I went to see Powerwolf supported by Warkings at the Roundhosue in Camden. Sadly no Dragonforce at the London gig. Both bands were amazing live in all their power metal glory! I don't think either band were off key or missed a note. Powerwolf even had some pyrotechnics.

Powerwolf's Dancing with the Dead will be familair with those who listen to Planet Rock:

Warking's Gladiator:

Just for a moment, I misinterpreted "Warkings" as if it contained the Anglo-saxon "-inge" suffix indicating "the people of", so that I read "Wark-ings".
It left me very puzzled until I realised the correct reading!

I've obviously been spending too much time thinking about post-Roman Britain. :S

Music, one of man's greatest achievements, is quickly becoming more popular with each passing day. We invite you to follow along as our scientists work to conceive of a future where music is created, not by man, but by machine.

Fed up with all those cheesy Christmas songs and people spamming Last Christmas in an attempt to send their friends and loved ones to Whamhalla? Well, I present a different take on Christmas music courtesy of the late, great Christopher Lee!

Christmas music has been cancelled for a bit here. We’re playing Faithless loud, reflecting on the loss of Maxi Jazz by celebrating the wonderful work he was part of.

I just did a random pick from artists in my Apple Music library and landed on The Polyphonic Spree so listened to their first album.

I looked at the release date and it was 2003. I would have said it was 5-10 years old, tops. 😳

I found a website that gives you all the number one songs on your birthday. Over the years I've had some great songs at number one on my birthday from Tragedy to Billie Jean to 99 Red Balloons to the powerful Stay by Shakespeare Sister. However, on my 23rd birthday here in the UK it was the bloody awful All Saints and their song Pure Shores. It was on the UK soundtrack for the movie The Beach, replacing VAST's amazing song Touched - which sadly was missed off the UK release of the album.

So I will leave you with Touched by VAST. I actually made friends with the lead singer Jon Cosby and kept in touch with him over the years.

well last.fm have told me what they scrobbled last year.. which is probably quite accurate, albeit strongly biased due to Ann playing a 1930s soundtrack all weekend .. but still surprised me.. it's the stuff on endless loop that beats the curated playlists!

Touched!
Yes, I remember when the first strum of that guitar would stop a hundred goths in the their tracks and send them cascading onto the dance floor...
Sweet days.

On the turntable in nice orange vinyl, Jeff Beck's 'Blow by Blow'. Classic guitar jazz/rock fusion.

Here's one I missed earlier (didn't move to Milton Keynes until '84).

One day I will get around to that fantasy campaign based on Queen songs. With White Queen and Black Queen, Dragon Attack, Ogre Battle and the Fairy Fellow's Masterstroke, there's got to be a game in there with a ready made soundtrack!

Back on my journey with trying to get my ahead around jazz, I'm trying out this album by Kenny Garrett, a modern jazz saxophonist. Some lovely grooves and bluesy moods in this one.
