What have you splurged on recently? (continued)

I felt compelled to address a gap in my library, for nostalgia more than anything else:

I had pretty much all of 1st Edition back in the day, but sold it all a long time ago. These are the Standard Colour Hardback versions of the PODs from DriveThru and I am very happy with the quality.

These are Print-on-Demand versions, did they replicate the shine of the original anniversary editions? I only have the green AD&D2e books I purchased in homage to my CRPG Baldur's Gate legacy

I think I under what you are asking, though I haven’t seen the original items. They are a consistent level of gloss throughout the cover. They don’t have a shiny emphasis on the round picture inserts (like, for example, the Savage Pathfinder books do) which make the picture ‘pop’. I think that is what you are asking?

Thanks, yes, the hardcover anniversary books got that special treatment. But prices are crazy now if you missed the original sale, so PoD seems prudent. Because the very first Baldur's Gate CRPG was powered by AD&D2e, those hold a special place for me.

I think the size of these books really hide the simplicity of the game engine within.

FirstAge has championed the simplicity of Cypher System for a long time.

The specialty books like Numenera and The Strange are filled with lore not statblocks like a Pathfinder rule book. Hence, I wanted the Ptolus Cypher to compare to my original Ptolus D&D 3.5,, but Monte Cook has no empathy for non-American buyers' shipping costs (probably better now than after that Kickstarter).

My copy of Ptolus Cypher should arrive today as i picked it up half price in the Gameslore sale.

I’ll definitely give you page count, and see how much system unique stuff there is. However, I never owned the original or the newer 5e version (which was listed with the same page count) so can’t give a comparison. That’s all assuming that it’s arrival doesn’t warp space and time and form a singularity once it gets close to my copy of Traveller T5. It certainly looks like a tome…

It is a tome. Initial look is 670 pages to the OGL licence at the back. Skimming the table of contents Cyphers and Artefacts only get a few pages so they may be dealt with in-line. I’ll dig deeper later once I’ve finished doing the de-Christmas-ing of the house and loft clear.
