[wordplay/TRIPOD] TRIPOD Essence - First Look

First Age

D&D h@ck3r and Hopepunk
A quick flip through my forthcoming TRIPOD (Traits in Pools of Dice) RPG, a light narrative framework for one shot and campaign play. D6 dice pool with flexible traits. Just waiting for a second proof to come through, so should be live in a week or two.

Since we are playing Gran Meccanismo - I ran the first session on Monday doing the first couple of scenes in A Summer Night, a theft scenario.

There were a couple of things from the running which raised the are we doing this right questions as we haven't played or ran TRIPODF previously so first outing with the system,

Some high level thoughts were. on the first scene which is a chase one where there were four challenges to overcome, each player rolls against the challenge number with a you are falling behind trait if they failed to get the required successes. I am wondering if I should have handled that scene differently with one player leading the chase and seeing how the other characters contribute to the dice pool.

The other bit is that I will need to get them to do short goals next session as the adventure has begun

You can do it either way - the first has the advantage that you can split the characters out and they all face the challenge individually.
You can also do it as you suggest, with them helping each other, but it does mean that they all win or fail together.

Tripod is pretty flexible like that, but I think that @First Age can give a more definitive answer.

@Dom has it. Tripod is super flexible and supports how you want the spotlight to fall for any challenge. The way the challenge is setup in this example makes it a kind of multi-roll challenge (p.32), where you need to get through four challenge points to be sure of success. The way I would do it would be to have a different player lead the resolution of each challenge point. One other player can provide a supporting trait (p.30) and provide their dice to the lead player for that challenge point.

I'm guessing that the falling behind traits stack? If so, the fourth roll determines overall success at escape/catching, applying the accumulated falling behind penalty.

If you didn't want the spotlight to focus too long on the chase then you could make it a one-roll challenge, stack in some environmental traits, perhaps open out support to two other players and roll to resolve in one go. Once the result is known, have the players narrate how it plays out, noting the different contribution from the leader, the supporting players and environmental factors.

(Mental note to run some Tripod sometime soon...).

So second session of Gran Meccanismo on Monday was in the bar scene with a wee chase.

We made use of the goals (with someone losing theirs due to doubt) and made use of scenes traits which is something need to do.

Enjoying it at the moment, though does get a bit getting used to either system and the world.

Equipment should get used more in the forthcoming games
