• The Tavern needs to be a safe place and comply with the law. In the UK the OSA requires us to know the age of our members and posters, and yet the UK Govt. has not provided a method to do this that is affordable to small voluntary BBS like ours. To that end, all members are safe and secure, we know you must be adults by now. However if you wish to join as a member, please contact us using the form at the [very] bottom of the page and we shall do a one to one verifiaction.

Gaming in Retirement

Thanks very much all for the fascinating insight into how it all plays out in reality. I guess my image of things was that one would be starting gaming groups from scratch based on wherever one found oneself - drawing on whoever nearby also had time in hand, be those young folks or other retirees. Very interesting to see that many of you have hung on to your old gaming groups all this time, with that scheduling bottleneck.

I have moved countries so it is not, nor will be, a practical option for me, but of course why wouldn't it be for others...

I'm 18 years away from retiring.

I think I'm about the same.
With "missing" council pensions and the like with pension fees, I'm going to be working until my seventies. 😑

My energy levels are certainly took a hit recently since my prostatectomy at the end of last year.
I find I do very little once I finish work and get home in the evening.
I had a few on-line campaigns of Tales from the Loop and Vaesen running but haven't been able to continue them this year.

I have managed to get to a few RPG Conventions this year. I have to commit and stay over for the full weekend when I do but that means I can run games in every gaming slot.
Due to holidays I've managed to miss both North Star and Furnace this year.
I've even expanded my game repertoire beyond Fria Ligan games, I've been experimenting with Huckleberry RPG, a Wyrd Wild West game.

I'm also organising a small RPG Convention deep in Nottingham's caves in November so that should keep me busy as well.

My suggestion is that we try and group together those of us who are free in the daytime and organized games for us. This would be separate to the games with young people who still have things to do in the day.
On the whole I think that's likely that those daytime games will be online because that supports rolling out of bed into the morning grabbing a cup of coffee and sitting down without having to go through the rigmarole of getting up and out the house.
Not that I mean anyway suggesting this is the only thing we do with our lives I think it's only a small proportion of the days of the week.
Plus if you're a night owl it's not going to work for you.

Anyway if you are interested please do let me know because there is a section of the tavern discord that is just for people who are interested in gaming in the daytime.
I'd be up for a spot of daytime gaming, either as player or happy to run.

Since retiring at the end of 2024 it's been a gaming renaissance for me. Much more variety of games than my previous gaming habits and playing with different groups has been great.

Already got two weekends booked out for gaming in November, so will likely have to give it a miss, but sounds like it will be fun.

Do tell us about CaveCon if it's open to outsiders.
