As I'm a huge fan of the franchise, I've decided to pre-order the G.I. JOE Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook. For those in the UK and Europe, you may recall that G.I. JOE was branded Action Force outside the United States.

In the G.I. JOE Roleplaying game, create your own Joe by choosing your military training origin, personal traits, and role within the G.I. Joe organization to become a Real American Hero and save the day!

This book contains everything you need to create your own G.I. JOE character and play the game - just add dice, some friends, and your imagination.

Features:
  • Create your own unique G.I. JOE character
  • Full rulebook for running your own G.I. JOE Roleplaying Game
  • One Gamemaster leads the story with a group of players
  • Contains introductory adventure for new team
  • Full color hardcover book with 304 pages with ribbon bookmark

The game will use the new Esscence20 system, brief details of which can be found via the link below:

Hope it will be great for you. That hastily written system page makes it sound a bit weird and fiddly.

I felt Retaliation was closer to the original 80s cartoons than Rise of Cobra in terms of plot and overall feel. It's a shame that it made just one mistake by the removal of certain cast member.

I'm currently watching Renegades for free on the official YouTube channel, which borrows ideas from Retaliation. I may give Sigma 6 a go next. Neither series was released in the UK for broadcast.

Didn't we call this Action Man back in the day? My dad forever wound me up saying "Go play with your dolls". I suppose in this more enlightened age Action Man is a 'sexist misogynist dinosaur' term to quote Judi Dench.

They made a big deal about eagle eyes and everyone had to have one. A few years later they were consigned to the dog kennel because he'd already mangled most of them up beyond recognition. Mine were the only ones on the street with fingers too. No one said being Action Man was easy.

The G.I. Joe RPG is based on the A Real American Hero 3.75-inch scale figure line that was launched in 1982, along with a Marvel comic book series, to revamp the outdated G.I. Joe dolls of the late 60s and early 70s. Action Man was the international version of the same doll line, manufactured and distributed under licence. Please feel free to check out the history below:

I think some of you will like the Essecne20 system. It's similar in some ways to D20 and 5e. It has a class and level structure, but with the added emphasis that each Role has a number of focuses options. For example, in G.I.JOE Spy and Infiltrator are focus options for the Commando Role. Plus you can pick an Influence such as Athlete and an Origin such as a branch of the military to flesh out your character's past. Essence20 is clearly birthed out of 5e. However, I feel E20 is better, and addresses a lot of the issues I have with most level based games.

How does Essence20 manage the Hit Point and Damage axis through ascending levels?

Going on from what I've read so far, you have Health instead of Hit Points, but you have a much lower amount. However, the games uses the term "Defeated" instead of dying or dead, and what's more, you can be revived after you have been defeated in a number of ways. As for damage, I've not got that far.

I've been toying with this as well - I loved the animated series and the film 'Rise of Cobra' was great (just don't mention the sequel. Haven't seen 'Snake Eyes' yet so can't comment.

I thought Retaliation was better than Rise of Cobra, mainly because it felt closer to the original comics. In my opinion, Snake Eyes is probably the best of the three movies. However, I think G.I.JOE would work better as a live-action streaming series than a film franchise.

He certainly seemed quite prone to leprosy, must have been all those missions in unhealthy foreign climes.

Does anyone remember the Action Man novels? Even as a kid I thought they weren't up to much, although I still reckon"Snow, Ice and Bullets" is one of the best book titles ever.

Actionman, even owned by Hasbro, isn't technically part of the G.I.Joe franchise. The focus changed in 1982 to what it is today.

I have a few people already shown interested in playing a game of G.I.JOE. If you're also interested then please let me know and I can organise a game.

For those who are interested in learning about the Essesence20 system and the G.I.JOE RPG, then the review below is pretty good at explaining the basics.
