BALDUR'S GATE III

Hear one, hear all, especially all Minthara lovers. There are rumours swirling around that to earn the love of this fine drow waifu will no longer require petty genocide.

Yes, yes, I know, those of you who already walked that dark route may feel cheated that Larian tricked you into selling your souls to evil gods when there was always a heroic path coming to redeem the drow. Actually, this is still a rumour, but there is a cascade of lamentations of drow lovers like yours truly, that this heroic path may just become reality.

So I am playing the Beta of the Rogue Trader CRPG.

If this was launched ten years ago, it would have been a remarkable achievement. It is very old school now, harkening back to the iconic Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn.

Worst of all, today, it is competing against Baldur's Gate III, and that we all know is a fool's errand. Baldur's Gate III storytelling, voice acting, questing, and artistic rendering, are godlike manifestations in the world of Computer Role Playing Games (there is even a debate that Baldur's Gate is too good to be an Indie:

But good news that Rogue Trader is surely very I die, though, that distinction does not stop Rogue Trader's railroad set pieces grinding your gears if you are coming here from Baldur's Gate III not II. Plus, the combat is turn based tactical grid, so slow but very tabletop, and fun to play if you are coming from the Warhammer 40000 miniatures game.

Overalll, I am enjoying Rogue Trader as its own thing and it also beautifully captures the spirit of the grim darkness and anachronistic gothic retro futurism of the source lore.

Sorry, can you explain this?
The combat is very deadly but since it is turn-based tactical, positioning, cover, combined arms, all form crucial parts of success. Else your crew suffers TPK over and over (unless you cheat and take the lowest difficulty configuration settings option). So that is where the good replayability is built. Same starting position but dice rolls can trigger different results, so next round you react differently.

The only downside is fighting mooks and waiting for each one to take a turn (tick, tick, tick, go the seconds), and if commander is present make smart enemies too that disperse after injury to avoid area effect weapons.

I like two things in CRPGS.. turn based combat and very easy difficulty.

Okay, I spent the weekend playing through Rogue Trader as new character who seems to be more me than the last one.

And probably because the character is too polite for the grim darkness of the 41st Millenium, he got the fairer sex thinking of romance.
Next time I need to play more grim and dark to avoid such complications. Only 6% of players have fallen down this slaneeshi path.

Instead of playing my usual gun-bunny, I thought an officer and leader of men would be a welcome change. But too charismatic now.

If you have PlayStation Plus then the Shadowrun trilogy is currently free to download - you just need to download each product individually rather than picking the trilogy itself (weird implementation!)

Bugs galore in the Rogue Trader CRPG, but maybe this is in keeping witht the theme of the grim darkness of the far future.

Text messages appearing on an English game in the Cyrillic alphabet (probably Russian, and not this is not a hack).

Go for it.
Modiphius has loads of minis and even an RPG.
However didn't you say you were going to try a fan build.
