Dwarf Fortress

I remember this game way back when it was the epitome of ASCII art, though not really one I played extensively, just more of a curio.
 
Dwarf Fortress is one of the most complex computer games in the history of computer games. How complex? In the game's discussion forum, one player asserts that after 120 failed games, he can finally "get into the swing of things."

I bought the new version as soon as I knew I'd have some time to play it and I've already had my first disaster: an attack by a werehedgehog started a spiral of lycanthropy (well, echanthropy) infections that ultimately wiped out the entire fort. But for a time, there were so many bodies piled up in the corridors that every visitor to the fortress started out horrified but by the time they got to the tavern were completely hardened to the sight of death.

This kind of citybuilding micromanagement sim has always been my jam (I started PC gaming with Caesar II back in 1996) and Dwarf Fortress is probably the ultimate example of the genre. Even after years of playing the free version there are so many aspects of the game I've yet to dip into. And everyone who's played for a while has a story, from the epic to the small and personal, because stories evolve out of that extraordinary level of detail.

I remember Caesar II, the prevalent city fires were so annoying, after I spent money making a beautiful city in-game
